Body Maps.
Emily Ragus.
Part of the exhibition on the Durban floods. University of KwaZulu Natal and KwaZulu Natal Society of the Arts, Durban, 30 March.
AUTHOR’S NOTE:
As part of my arts-based research on climate uncertainty and disasters, I incorporated body mapping workshops with flood-affected communities in Durban, South Africa. This method, rooted in decolonial and participatory approaches, allowed participants to visually narrate their experiences of environmental violence, grief, and survival. Through tracing their own bodies and embedding symbols, colors, and sensorial data, they articulated how floods materialize within and upon the body—through embodied stories of loss and repair.
