Marius Marais is a lecturer at the University of Limpopo. His research focuses on the effect of land tenure systems on spontaneous economic, land and township development processes in peri-urban regions, especially in the former homelands of South Africa- and how this redefines urbanism, rural sprawl and informality in the Global South. Other research interests include the use of Remote Sensing & Landscape Ecology techniques in Environmental Assessment; and the efficacy of Environmental Management Frameworks in Land Use Planning and Management practice.
