Prof. Lenore Manderson
Distinguished Professor of Public Health and Medical Anthropology, School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She took this post in 2014 after an extensive career in Australia. Her research includes work on infectious disease and chronic conditions, structural inequality and social justice, gender and sexuality. Her extensive publications, individually and in collaboration, include Viral Loads (2021), Water’s Edge (2022) and Cancer and the Politics of Care (2023). Lenore Manderson edited Medical Anthropology 2010-2020; and is currently book editor for the medical anthropology series with Rutgers University Press 2016+; and editor of Human Organization 2023+. She increasingly works on climate science and the environment, including a series of arts/science programs, while also working at Brown University. She is committed to supporting anthropologists in government, non-profit and for-profit sectors, and in interdisciplinary settings where policy, service design and delivery can address challenges in social, political and economic life. Lenore Manderson is a South African NRF A1 scholar and received the 2023 Bronislaw Malinowski Award from the Society for Applied Anthropology, in recognition of her work devoted to solving human problems using the concepts and tools of social sciences.
